The Perfect Luxury Weekend in Cape Breton: What to Do, Where to Stay and the Best Restaurants
I am ashamed to admit that until very recently, I had never heard of Cape Breton before. Sadly, like a stereotypical American, I am pretty unfamiliar with Canada in general (pathetic really). I was asked to join a press trip to Cape Breton and happened to have some free time over the long Fourth of July weekend, so I decided to look into this elusive island.
After reading a National Geographic article, which compiled the top 20 places to see in 2013 and finding Cape Breton on this short list, I figured, how could I not go! In fact, as I continued my research I found that Travel and Leisure named it the third best island in the WORLD, following Santorini and Bali! Pretty good company to be in, huh? I sat back and wondered, how had I never heard of Cape Breton?
Well, if you can’t guess from the title of this article, I decided to go to Cape Breton. I am fresh off an incredible trip that was filled with fantastic experiences– and boy did I venture outside of my comfort zone. This girl even went fly-fishing! In addition to fun outdoorsy activities, there are all kinds of fantastic luxurious options all over this magical little island for the spoiled traveler like moi.
I am so excited to share my recommendations for what I think would make for a fantastically luxurious trip to Cape Breton. I don’t know how it’s flown under the radar thus far but I suspect that won’t be the case for long…
Introduction to Cape Breton
Cape Breton was originally settled by the Mi’kmaq and later by the Scots, which is apparent from both the accents and the immense popularity of Celtic music around the island. Today the island has a mingling of Canadian, French and Celtic culture, which is what makes it so special. When trying to describe it to a friend I said imagine an island with a mish mash of Maine’s nautical-ness and seafood, Scotland’s rich heritage, New Zealand’s greenery and Canada’s wonderful people. Not bad, eh? (That expression has grown on me!) There is something for every type of traveler. Whether you’re a family looking for fun or a couple looking for a romantic getaway, you can find–breathtaking scenic beauty, outdoor adventure, charming villages, outstanding cuisine and gorgeous accommodations.
What to Do
Well, it pretty much goes without saying that you need to spend a large portion of your trip to Cape Breton Island outside, enjoying the abundance of natural beauty that it has to offer. I recommend driving along the Cabot Trail, which will take you through many wonderful parts of the island, including Cape Breton Highlands National Park. This is nearly a 200-mile driving route that is consistently ranked as one of the best drives in the world. A drive along this route will bring you to different areas around the island where you can take part in the different activities each region offers. Here are a few of my favorite things I did around the island:
A trip to the Miners’ Museum is not to be missed. Learn firsthand from former miners what life was like working underground and rarely seeing sunlight.
The historical grounds of Louisbourg provide a unique experience similar to Colonial Williamsburg. Venture back in time to an 18th-century French fortress and visit the reconstructed buildings where employees, dressed in 18th century garb, take on the roles of traditional residents from back in the day and recreate life from Louisbourg’s glory days. Enjoy a traditional dance in a luxury home, visit the local blacksmith or bakery and learn what life was like here.
Enjoy a Whale Cruise in Pleasant Bay. Vessels are intimate, which ensures a greater likelihood of encountering these magnificent creatures. The boat ride itself is very relaxing and romantic and the whales are of course an added bonus!
Hike the Skyline Trail! This is absolutely not to be missed. This relatively easy hike will provide some of the best views that Cape Breton Island has to offer. Keep your eyes peeled! You may even see a moose along the way!
Visit Cheticamp, a gorgeous area of the island where a large population of natively-French speaking Acadians reside. While you’re here be sure to visit the Museum of Hooked Rugs & Home Life featuring the Elizabeth LeFort Gallery. I know you might think that I’ve lost my mind for recommending this but the artwork here is astonishing–think grand portraits made for U.S. presidents (and even one of Jackie-O) made entirely of hooked yarn. You have to see it to appreciate the craftsmanship.
If you’re feeling adventurous you can try your hand out at Fly Fishing. When in Cape Breton, right? I found this to be really fun and it definitely provided some fabulous Kodak moments! When I’m on vacation I always make sure to step outside my comfort zone for at least a little while.
Take a tour of the Glenora Distillery, learn about their single malt whiskeys and at the end even have a chance to try some! Be sure to grab a glass in the pub and enjoy some live music!
A sailing tour aboard the Ameoba in Baddeck is one of the most relaxing ways to pass an afternoon in Cape Breton. While aboard you’ll see Alexander Graham Bell’s former home (where his descendants still summer today) and you may even have the chance to see some eagles.
Baddeck is beautiful and this is why Alexander Graham Bell chose to make it the site of his summer home for 37 summers. He is quoted as saying, “I have seen the Canadian and American Rockies, the Andes, the Alps and the Highlands of Scotland but for simple beauty, Cape Breton outrivals them all.”
While in Baddeck be sure to check out the Alexander Graham Bell Museum for a cool, interactive history lesson of one of the world’s greatest inventors. For just a little bit extra, I think the White Glove Tour is an amazing experience. Seize the chance to hold AGB’s possessions with your very own (white-gloved) hands. View his own personal notebook chocked full of scribbles and notes to himself. Mind-blowing for any history buff that they allow you to do this!
If you’re in town for Celtic Colours, which takes place in October, you’re in for a real treat! This International Festival includes a mix of nearly 50 local, national and international musical artists and more than 200 cultural events.
Don’t miss the live music at Keltic Lodge in the Highland Sitting Room. This lively lounge is guaranteed to be a great time!
Play a round of golf at Cabot Links golf course, a traditionally Scottish and Irish oceanfront course.
Where to Stay
Although this island may have its fair share of rugged beauty, rest assured that if you’re looking to lay your head somewhere luxurious, there are definitely some great options.
Cabot Links gets everything right—from its spacious rooms, Frette linens, L’Occitane toiletries, Nespresso espresso machines, marble rain-showers and luxurious bathtubs. Every room has an ocean view and are all just a quick walk from the first hole. The restaurant is top-notch and serves up hearty portions of solid food.
Keltic Lodge is located right in the center of Cape Breton’s Highland National Park. It’s surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean and is the perfect destination for a couple or family looking for lots of recreational facilities. There is a heated pool, Aveda Spa, hiking trails, swimming at Ingonish Beach and it’s just next to Highlands Links Golf Course.
Where to Eat
One of my favorite lunches I had while in Cape Breton was at the Oceanside restaurant, the Rusty Anchor, featured in National Geographic. The lobster roll here was divine and mayonnaise free—my favorite!
The best whole lobster I had on the island was at the Purple Thistle, which is located at the Keltic Lodge. This restaurant also boasts breathtaking views of the ocean and delicious scallops.
While the Normaway Inn itself may be a bit of a throwback to the days of Dirty Dancing, its restaurant is run by an extremely gifted chef that is keeping up with the hottest culinary trends, including the local food movement. The maple salmon and trout here are out of this world. And perhaps my favorite cocktail I’ve had all year was served here as well—a rhubarb martini! If you’re looking to party, there is also a weekly shin-dig with live music in the property’s big red barn, which attracts hundreds of locals and guests alike.
Enjoy a bit of live music and whiskey-inspired dishes at the Glenora Distillery Restaurant. The blueberry cobbler and the lobster salad here topped my list of favorites!
Panoramo at Cabot Links Hotel is one of the fanciest restaurants on the island and they nail just about every dish we tasted. The Lobster Ravioli is to die for as is the blueberry cobbler–and I don’t even like blueberry cobbler!
Bell Buoy serves fabulous lobster sandwiches. Take these to go and enjoy aboard the Amoeba sailing tour.
The Dancing Goat serves up fancy coffees and incredible cookies. I recommend the Peanut Butter Chocolate chip!
Stay tuned for many more articles about my experience in Cape Breton, including hotel reviews and plenty of pictures!

I live here, and haven’t gotten to do most of what you mentioned.. LOL I love this place, and wouldn’t trade it for the world.. but it’s hard living here. There isn’t much in the way of employment opportunity, and most of the young people have gone, moved out west. It’s sad really, almost feels lonely here now.
I do agree however, that it is magnificent, and majestic.. Warm and inviting, and we always welcome guests, from near or far..
Glad you enjoyed your stay and thank you for spreading the word!!

Glad you took a trip to the Miners Museum – I spent two summers working here when I was in university and it still remains my all-time favourite job. This is a piece I will read and read again when I need a little dose of home – great job!
- July 9, 2013Thanks so much for your kind words about the article. I too am glad I had a chance to visit the Miner’s museum. Abbie was our guide and he was incredible. I only wish we had more time. I hope you will come back again. Would love if you followed the blog by email or RSS! Have a great day!
- July 9, 2013I am lucky enough to have been born and raised on Cape Breton Island. Unfortunately, I didn’t appreciate it enough when I was younger and now live in Boston, MA on the northshore. Every time I can,I try to return to my beautiful island. I am so happy you got to experience it. Your article made me teary, I miss home so much. “We are an island, a rock in the stream. We are a people as proud as there’s been. In soft summer breeze or in would winter’s wind, the home of our heart, Cape Breton.” I miss you.
- July 9, 2013Charlotte, well I am sure you appreciate it now and that’s what counts 🙂 I hope you will follow my blog and subscribe to follow more of my travels 🙂
- July 9, 2013Great article, thanks for bringing some much needed attention to the younger people. I explain it as…everyone is in fastforward these days..Cape Breton stays in reverse and the people down to earth:) The Home of My Heart, Cape Breton xo

- July 9, 2013I really enjoyed your article. I was born and raised in Cape Breton, unfortunately I don’t live there any longer, but it will always be my home. You really must see the Cabot Trail in the fall when the leaves are changing colour. There really is nothing in this world that can compare to it’s beauty. I’m happy you enjoyed your first trip to the Island and hope you have many more. It will only get better.
- July 9, 2013Thanks for stopping by! I can only imagine how gorgeous Cape Breton looks with all the amazing fall colors! Please don’t forget to sign up for our newsletter to keep up with our posts or subscribe via RSS feed. We’d love you to come back!
- July 9, 2013Great article. I have lived here all my life and had the opportunity to move on, but chose to carve out a career here… and it’s been worth the effort. We play tourist in our own backyard rather than travel off island, as there are so many treasures to discover. Check out the Right Some Good food festival too, if you want fabulous food. Chefs from all over the world cook at scenic locations all over Cape Breton. That event and Celtic Colours shouldn’t be missed. Thank you for spreading the word about our wonderful island !
- July 9, 2013My pleasure! I will definitely look into the Right Some Good food festival for my return trip back! Please be sure to follow my blog and sign up for our emails, which only go out when I post a new article! Cheers! Enjoy your beautiful home!
- July 9, 2013Although the island is beautiful and you mentioned many of the attractions, it saddens me to see that you completely missed mentioning this first people of the island.
- July 9, 2013The Mi’kmaw people are the aboriginal inhabitant of this area and their culture is rich and accessible. I thought they would at least be mentioned in your paragraph regarding Louisburg and I find it a bit disappointing.
I feel as though you missed an important and unique experience of the island by skipping over these people, their heritage, history, and view of the island. They are very much alive and there many reserves and cultural centres scattered all over the island.
Next time you return I recommend at the very least you do the Cabot Trail with a Mi’kmaw elder – your experience will be increased by a tenfold !
Although our Celtic and Scotish heritage is important, it is not the only one to explore and learn about here 🙂
I am sad that I did not get to experience this as well. I did, however, have a chance to experience a Smudgeing Ceremony at the community center of Membertou, which was very interesting. I left it out of this article because I was focusing specifically on a luxury trip. I will look into this though for next time! Thanks for bringing it to my attention!
- July 9, 2013Love that you enjoyed your visit to our little island! Its so heartwarming to hear travelers speaking about us with such kind words. Your article is fantastic. Hopefully we’ll see you again!
- July 9, 2013Thanks for your kind words! I will definitely be back!
- July 11, 2013Thank you for writing such a beautiful article. i was born and raised in Cape Breton but now I live in Japan. There really is no other place like it in the world. I’m coming home soon.
- July 9, 2013Wow, well I’m sure Japan is amazing as well! Not too shabby! Thanks for stopping by! Please do subscribe to our newsletter or sign up to our RSS feed. We hope you’ll be back 🙂
- July 9, 2013First of all, I would like to thank you for writing such a good article about Cape Breton. I might be prejudice since I live in Cheticamp which is a small acadian village along the Cabot Trail. We are very proud of our heritage, culture and we do appreciate our scenery. With your article, you were able to show everyone that Cape Breton has a lot to offer for any ages and its not just a fishing village especially for Cheticamp. - July 10, 2013I’m a born-and-raised Cape Bretoner too. I’m so happy you enjoyed your trip here! May I recommend that next time you come to our beautiful Island, you take the route along the east coast? There are some beautiful places to stop along the way, and some interesting things to do as well!!
- July 10, 2013Thanks for the suggestion! I will keep that in mind for sure!
- July 10, 2013Next time you are back to Cape Breton you must check out the beautiful scenery in Meat Cove. Breathtaking!

- July 10, 2013Yum! Sounds like a plan for my next trip!
- July 10, 2013I, too was born and raised in CB by the water. I moved away in 60 to find work and ended up in Pictou County but I go back home whenever I get the chance because I sometimes need a “CB fix”. I am so proud to be a part of it and have experienced the wonderful people who love to welcome others to this beautiful place. Growing up there and listening to the wonderful music has affected me for life in such a good way. I hope you do go back to CB and bring your friends. You have done a great job of describing CB. Love it! It is such a big part of who I am.
- July 10, 2013Thanks for the wonderful compliments! I truly appreciate them. Please remember to share this article and follow me to keep up with all my adventures! (Top Right Corner)
- July 10, 2013Thank you so much for the beautiful words about Cape Breton. I was born in a small town next to Glace Bay called Dominion. My parents and some siblings are still there. I don’t get to go home as much as I would like as I am in the Army & I’m currently posted abroad. But this made me smile :)!! It also made me miss it more! No matter where I live, Cape Breton will always be my home!! Thanks again for your beautiful words & pictures. And I’m glad to got to have some wonderful experiences like fly fishing. Michelle 🙂
- July 10, 2013Thanks for the compliments! Glad the article was able to give you a little taste of home!
- July 10, 2013What a positive and encouraging article! Thank you so much! I feel I’ve taken my beautiful home for granted. Sometimes we need someone to remind us of what we have. You seem like a lovely person, again thank you.
- July 10, 2013Thanks so much! You do have a lovely home!! Please be sure to share the love 🙂 Even one share goes a long way!
- July 10, 2013Don’t forget about the Red Shoe Pub in Mabou, home of the Rankin family or the Judique Cultural Centre. It is a great place to live!!!!
- July 10, 2013Will have to check that out on my next visit!
- July 10, 2013Thanks for visiting our beautiful island 🙂 it truly is the best place on earth!
- July 10, 2013I quite agree 🙂
- July 10, 2013Great article! My husband’s parents are both from Nova Scotia, his mom from Halifax and dad from Cape Breton. A few years ago (before we were married) I was able to tag along on a trip to Cape Breton for a family reunion. I was blown away! It is so peaceful and gorgeous and I cannot wait to go back! We took the drive along the cabot trail and did many of the same things (I have a picture of us in those adirondack chairs at the keltic lodge too!) but apparently missed a few things too…fly fishing is on my list for our next trip! One thing I didn’t see you mention, that I hope you didn’t miss out on, is all the waterfalls!!! We found a couple marked on the map we bought and found our way to them. Ok, now I’m just rambling – glad you had a great trip, sure made me anxious to go back!
- July 10, 2013Wow! I didn’t see the waterfalls! I guess it gives me a reason to go back!!!
- July 10, 2013Great article! It is a wonderful place to visit, but I will sadly echo the previous comments: it’s a rough place to make a living.
Some more additions to your experience that I always recommend to people are: the beaches, ask the locals where they swim-lots of times it’s off the beaten path and not marked but there’s a reason the locals keep it secret! The water is cold but super refreshing. Explore the WW2 history of the Sydney area-there’s great stories about subs in the harbour and both sides of the harbour are dotted with barracks that were manned to defend against German subs!
Couple more wonderful restaurants that I love are: The Black Spoon, The Lobster Pound and Moore-both in North Sydney. Both owned by local chefs, they create wonderfully flavourful and filling dishes that are to die for! Amadeus Italian Restaurant in Sydney is amazing too. WIth a young red seal chef in the kitchen, the dishes are again wonderfully flavourful and filling! Plus they have the lovely tradition of crusty bread with olive oil and balsamic vinegar dip that I think I could easily live off of if I ever had to.
- July 10, 2013Thanks for all the recs! I will be sure to keep these in mind the next time i visit! Please remember to share this article and follow me to keep up with all my adventures! (Top Right Corner)
- July 10, 2013I recently moved back home to Cape Breton because I missed it terribly. I brought my husband, a Prince Edward Islander, who has since grown to love my home. He even considers himself a Caper and has made plans to retire to the highlands.
There is something so special about this island for both locals and visitors alike. From it’s raw natural beauty, to the general hospitality. It was so heart-warming to come home to find myself being called “hun”, “sweetie”, and have great conversations with strangers while waiting in line at the grocery stores. No matter where you go, you will find people who are welcoming and accommodating!
Thank you for blogging about our home. When you come back, ask locals for the hidden gems (restaurants, eateries, hiking trails, artisans, outdoor activities) that aren’t officially listed or well known. Such a treat! There is a festival in the fall called “Hike the Highlands” where there are guided hikes on all the trails in the Highlands National Park. Also wonderful places for kayaking, paddleboarding, and even surfing(Point Michaud). I’ve been devoting a summer to re-exploring home and you’ve shown me a few things I need to put on my list! 🙂
- July 10, 2013It was my pleasure! it truly is a magical spot!! I loved it there and will have to go back soon!
- July 10, 2013A great article. Thanks for visiting our island. I absolutely love living here and feel very fortunate! So glad you had a wonderful experience. Hope you get to come back. You will have to visit the Gaelic College to experience more of the Scottish culture and maybe have your guy dressed in the Great Kilt during our cultural demonstrations. The fall is a spectacular time to visit with all the colors. You would really enjoy the Celtic Colors music festival with events all over the island. See you there, eh?
- July 10, 2013I miss the “ehs” already being back in the states! Please share the love (Google +, Stumble Upon, Twitter, Facebook on the left or at the bottom of this article). A little love goes a long way!
- July 10, 2013I am glad that you enjoyed our island – next time you visit, perhaps you will search out some of our “hidden gems” that our Island will reveal. As a sixth generation (Scottish) Caper, it is my blessing to be able to “hack out” a living here in this lovely place. Having travelled extensively in my younger days, I am very aware of just how lovely it is here. Only one correction to your article: this place was settled first by the Mi’kmaq indigenous peoples not the Scots. Without their help, we would have all perished. There is a very vibrant native culture here that is sometimes overlooked but needs to be acknowledged for what it is. Thank you.
- July 10, 2013Wow, that is good to know. I will have to make note of that. Thanks for the information!
- July 10, 2013What a great review of our gorgeous island! It sounds like you stayed at Cabot, but didn’t golf – that’s another amazing part of the Island.. great golf courses, particularly Cabot Links (Inverness).
It looks like you had amazing weather and many adventures!
If you’re heading back, or anyone is heading that way, check out St. Peter’s Canal National Historic Site, located in St. Peter’s! It dates back to before Louisbourg, and supplied Louisbourg with bricks and lumber! And if you’re looking for a great place to stop and eat, try the Fleur de Lis in Port Hawkesbury (my hometown) – best breakfast and homemade soups!
Happy summer!
- July 10, 2013We did have amazing weather! We lucked out!! Loved our stay so much! Will def check out Port Hawkesbury!
- July 10, 2013I am lucky enough to have been born and raised on Cape Breton Island. Unfortunately, I didn’t appreciate it enough when I was younger and have live in several different cities and now live in Red Deer, Alberta. I am so happy you got to experience it. I send a week in Cheticamp just this past week and your article made me teary and missing it so much. “We are an island, a rock in the stream. We are a people as proud as there’s been. In soft summer breeze or in would winter’s wind, the home of our heart, Cape Breton will always be in my heart.
- July 10, 2013I am so impressed by the home spirit of the wonderful Capers! Please share the love (Google +, Stumble Upon, Twitter, Facebook on the left or at the bottom of this article). A little love goes a long way!
- July 10, 2013I was born and grew up on Cape Breton but moved out to the West Coast of Canada to British Columbia. I love it here but long for my home. I just wish this wasn’t such a huge country and I could get home more often. Once a Caper, always a Caper. Thank you for your kind comments about our beautiful island.
- July 10, 2013It was truly my pleasure! Please share the love (Google +, Stumble Upon, Twitter, Facebook on the left or at the bottom of this article). A little love goes a long way!
- July 10, 2013Thank you for the glowing words for my Island. You will definitely have to return and see the other side of the Island. Beautiful Isle Madame, scenic River Bourgeois, St. Peters, and beautiful Point Michaud Beach. I wouldn’t live anywhere else.
- July 10, 2013I look forward to visiting the other side on my next trip!
- July 10, 2013Glad you enjoyed our island! Keep plugging we need our tourism as it is basically one of our most significant industries!! I will say that even though I have lived here for basically 30 years I still find new places to go and things to do. In the last 2 days I have actually discovered a couple new places!! [Cape Clear which is a little tricky to get to, but a 4wd truck will get you there, and you really don’t have to walk at all- view is spectacular, miles in almost every direction! and the new dog/walking park area in Membertou].
- July 10, 2013If you ever make it back here though, make sure to try to go to Kennington Cove, I strongly recommend at nightime as it is a *great* place to view the nights’ sky away from any city lighting, fireflies, and the sound of the crashing waves- the atmosphere is so serene. There is also a small monument there which tells the story of how the British landed there when they took Louisburg at some point [it is only a 15 minutes drive from the fortress].
Wow thanks for the cool suggestions! I will keep plugging away! I truly loved it here!
- July 10, 2013Ahhhh, the home of my heart. I truly love Cape Breton and am proud to call it home. Like so many to comment before me, I no longer live there–I’ve moved on to a larger city that affords me more opportunity. However, my parents (Ma and Da, of course) still live on the Island and I go home to see them whenever possible. I don’t know that I’ll ever call another place “home” even though I own a house elsewhere in the world.
Thank you for spreading such a glowing review about Cape Breton. As I am sure you can see from all the comments, we are an intensely proud people and love to see others fall in love with the Island as much as we have. I think no matter where any of us may roam, we’ll always call Cape Breton home if that’s where we had put down roots at one time or another. I’m glad that you can now see why!
P.S. Have you ever gotten quite so many glowing comments so quickly? Ha.
- July 10, 2013No, seriously the outpouring of Cape Breton Love has been incredible!!!!
- July 10, 2013I live here and sadly this is my first year really getting out to enjoy what this island has to offer. Makes me proud to see travelers spending precious time here.
- July 10, 2013I truly did enjoy my time here! I savored every minute!!!
- July 10, 2013I agree with all you have said! I am lucky to call Cape Breton home and all the places you mentioned are amazing!!! It’s great to see it from a travellers perspective!!! I love the Keltic Lodge ~ it’s a place that just takes you away with thoughts of whimsey and days gone by. A historic charm that can’t be found just anywhere… truly magical place!
- July 11, 2013I quite agree! Wonderful place! I had a great time! Would love if you followed us (top right) on FB or Twitter or even just shared!
- July 11, 2013Hi Katie:
Thank you for giving such a wonderful review of our Island. I’ve lived here all my life, and I’m very proud to be a Cape Bretoner. As Cape Bretoners, we need to start taking advantage of what we have and enjoying it as much as the tourists do. My family and I went on the Amoeba Sailing Ship last week in Baddeck, and I totally agree, it was a wonderful experience. Maybe you could mention our Island to Kelly Ripa and Michael Strahan, and they could do a “feature week” on Cape Breton like they did for PEI.
- July 11, 2013It was all heartfelt! Haven’t been somewhere so inspiring in quite some time! It is absolutely incredible! I’ll see what I can do with Kelly and Michael 🙂
- July 11, 2013Just read your blog. Wonderful! So glad you got to enjoy the beauty of our island. We are very proud Cape Bretoners!!
- July 11, 2013Wow. Sounds like quite the place.
- July 12, 2013I was born here and still reside here. It is truly a beautiful island. Next time you are visiting you have to try out the homemade meat and chicken pies at Cottage Bakery in Louisdale…AWESOME!!!
- July 13, 2013I am so glad that you enjoyed the article. I will definitely try to visit Cottage Bakery next time I visit! Thanks for the rec!
- July 15, 2013Next time you come, visit Whycocomagh. You drive right through it when on the Trans Canada Highway. The Bras d’or lakes are located in Whycocomagh and the site is beautiful especially if you hike up Salt Mountain!
- July 13, 2013Will do! Thanks for the tip! Always love hearing from insiders!
- July 15, 2013Wow what a wonderful article!! Being raised in Cape Breton, I have not seen all the sites that you mentioned and moved away for employment.
Yes, do go along the Cabot Trail the third weekend of October, that is the best time to see the beautiful autumn colors.
And take more of the western side of the island in, and ask the locals for the hidden areas to see.
